Lord Paisley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Paisley , of Paisley in the County of Renfrew , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The title was created on July 29, 1587 by letter of nobility ( Letters Patent ) for the Scottish politician Claud Hamilton , a younger son of James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran . His son and heir James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn , was given the title of Lord Abercorn in 1603 and the title of Earl of Abercorn in 1606 , also in the Peerage of Scotland. However, since James died in 1618 and thus before his father († 1621), both inherited their titles of nobility to his son James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Abercorn . The Lordship of Paisley has since been listed as a subordinate title to the Earl of Abercorn. The Earl's Heir Apparent used Lord Paisley as a courtesy title from 1621 to 1790 . The 9th Lord Paisley was awarded the title of Marquess of Abercorn in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1790 . The 10th Lord Paisley was elevated to Duke of Abercorn in the Peerage of Ireland in 1868 . Today's title holder is James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn as 14th Lord Paisley.
