Aberdyfi Castle , also known as Aberdovey Castle, Abereinion Castle or Domen Las, is a former castle in Ceredigion in Wales . The castle site, which is protected as a Scheduled Monument , is not located directly at Aberdyfi , but about 9 km east of the place and 8 km southwest of Machynlleth on the left bank of the River Dovey at the confluence of the River Einion.

history

A first earth fortification was built in 1156 by Rhys ap Gruffydd von Deheubarth to protect the territories he had conquered in Ceredigion against an impending attack by Owain Gwynedd . After the conflict with Gwynedd could be settled without a battle, Rhys from Gruffydd expanded the fortification to a moth with earth and wood fortifications. In 1158 the castle was conquered by the Norman Earl Roger de Clare , but in the same year Rhys ap Gruffydd recaptured the castle.

In 1216 a meeting of the Welsh princes presumably took place in the castle, which Llywelyn ab Iorwerth , the prince of Gwynedd, had called. During the meeting, the heirs of Rhys ap Gruffydd reached an agreement in the Aberdyfi Agreement on the division of Deheubarth. After that, the castle is no longer mentioned.

The Motte rises above the marshland at the end of a small hill, which is surrounded on two sides by the confluence of the River Einion and the River Dovey. The castle hill is about 6 m high and has a top diameter of about 9 m. Originally it was surrounded on three sides by a deep moat, on the fourth side was the floodplain of the Dovey River.

The tree-covered castle hill is now on private land in the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve , but can be viewed from the A487 road that passes by. At the edge of the castle hill there is a wooden hut for bird watching.
