Abid Riaz Qureshi

Abid Riaz Qureshi is an American attorney of Pakistani origin who was nominated as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia .

Qureshi graduated from Cornell University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude. In 1977 he received his doctorate cum laude from Harvard Law School . He has spent his entire career as an attorney in the Washington offices of Latham & Watkins specializing in unauthorized claims , healthcare, fraud and securities matters. He currently serves as the chairman of the company's Pro Bono Committee. From 2006 to 2011 he was co-chair of the litigation department. He has been a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association's Legal Ethics Committee since 2015.

Appointed to the United States District Court

On September 6, 2016, President Obama named Qureshi to succeed Rosemary M. Collyer as United States District Judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. His nomination is currently pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee

Qureshi is the first Muslim to serve as the United States federal judge
