etymology

The name Abital ( Hebrew אֲבִיטַל 'ăvîṭal ) consists of two components: אֲבִי ' ăvî (my father) and טָל ṭāl (dew). Hans Rechenmacher, on the other hand, derives the name from the root ṭll “protect” and translates it as “father has protected”. In the Septuagint the name is rewritten to Αβιταλ Abital 2 Sam 3,4  LXX , in the Vulgate to Abital 2 Sam 3,4  VUL .

Mentions in the Bible

The name is mentioned twice in the Old Testament, in 2 Sam 3.4  EU and 1 Chr 3.3  EU . In both places Abital is mentioned as a wife of King David , who gave birth to his fifth son Shefatja in Hebron.

In the book of Samuel this is told in the context of the change of rule from King Saul to King David . In the Book of Chronicles this information is mentioned within the great table of people of Israel.
