Gaeta Agreement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gaeta Agreement was a political agreement concluded in Gaeta on March 26, 1451 between Alfonso V and two ambassadors of Skanderbeg : Stefan, Bishop of Kruja and Nikollë de Berguçi . In the agreement, Skanderbeg should recognize himself as a vassal of Alfonso, in return he would protect the League of Lezha from the Ottoman Empire .

Terms of the Agreement

The agreement was requested by Skanderbeg to ensure the protection of Albania and the League of Lezha against the Ottoman Empire . Although Alfonso himself had agreed to the agreement, it was signed by Arnaldo Fonolleda . The two Albanian ambassadors were bishops: Stefan was a bishop of the Orthodox Churches and Nikollë de Berguçi was one of the Roman Catholic Church .

The agreement stipulated that Alfonso was obliged to defend any Albanian city under threat if the Albanians needed military aid from the Kingdom of Naples . In return, Skanderbeg was supposed to take an oath of allegiance to the Crown of Aragon. As soon as Albania was freed from the Turkish invasion, Skanderbeg would pay him tribute and recognize the crown of Aragon, but he would keep his autonomy and self-government. The last point of the agreement said that Skanderbeg should only buy salt from Alfonso's warehouses instead of the Ottoman Empire at the same price as the Ottomans.

aftermath

After Alfonso made this agreement with Skanderbeg, he signed similar agreements with other Albanian rulers: Gjergj Arianiti , Gjin Muzaka , Pal Dukagjini , Peter Spani , Pjeter von Himara, Simon Zanebisha and others.
