The Absa Group (formerly Barclays Africa Group Limited ) is a South African financial services company whose shares are traded on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The company is one of the 40 largest companies on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is therefore also part of the FTSE / JSE Top 40 Index . The bank Absa Bank is a wholly owned subsidiary of Absa Group. In addition to South Africa, Absa also has offices in 12 other countries on the African continent.

Absa (originally: Amalgamated Banks of South Africa , German: Merged Banks of South Africa ) was created in 1991 through the merger of the three banks United Bank (South Africa), Allied Bank (South Africa) and Volkskas Bank. In 2005, Barclays Bank acquired 56.4% of the shares in Absa. According to Barclays, it was the largest FDI ever made in South Africa. In 2013 the name was changed to Barclays Africa Group Limited. After Barclays reduced its stake to less than 15% in 2018, the group renamed Absa Group. Barclays remains the company's largest single shareholder.
