The elutriation is a method to separate a mixture of coarse different materials. The slurrying is the first step of the method, the mixture is whirled in a suitable liquid and is thus in the further course of the time-dependent settling, according to the specific gravity, is possible.

The coarser fractions initially settle out of such a suspension . The supernatant slurry can be separated out and left to stand for the fine fractions to settle down. In particular, this process can be repeated several times in order to achieve a fractional separation.

Blow-down is used in industry and agriculture to separate sand and soil. For ore processing , it was largely displaced by flotation .
