Lists of aviation accidents

The crash of a Boeing 707-360C occurred on November 19, 1977 when a cargo plane of Ethiopian Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff, all five occupants of the machine were killed.

plane

The machine used on the flight was a Boeing 707-360C. The machine was received brand new by Ethiopian Airlines on April 8, 1968 and was registered with the aircraft registration ET-ACD , with which it was continuously in operation. From April 1974 the aircraft was leased to Iran Air , from June 6, 1976 to Air Algérie and, for an unspecified period, to Nigeria Airways .

On June 18, 1969, the plane at Karachi Airport was damaged by a bomb attack, which was later repaired.

crew

There was a three-person crew on board, consisting of the master, first officer and flight engineer. A loadmaster and a ground technician were in the machine as passengers.

the accident

The cargo flight was supposed to lead from Rome-Fiumicino airport to Asmara airport (then Ethiopia , now Eritrea ). The crew was assigned runway 25 for departure. After taking off after an exceptionally long take-off run, the plane barely gained any height. At 4:22 a.m. local time, the Boeing grazed the treetops to the west, 220 meters behind the end of the runway, at a height of seven to eight meters, fell 280 meters further and caught fire.

Cause of accident

The accident reportedly occurred due to overloading. The units of measurement are said to have been mixed up in the weight calculations. Instead of 19,000 Anglo-American pounds (approx. 8600 kilograms), which were calculated for the calculation of the take-off and take-off speed, the machine had loaded 19,000 kilograms.
