Abscess drainage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In medicine, abscess drainage is a method for relieving an abscess .

A rule that has been tried and tested for centuries in the treatment of abscesses is "Ubi pus, ibi evacua" ("Where pus is found, drain it there").

As a rule, abscesses are surgically opened, attached with a tab, rinsed and one waits for secondary healing. A rubber hose or part of a sterile glove can be used as a tab.

If an abscess can be easily reached using a targeted puncture or mini incision and a flushing tube or tab can be placed, patient flushing with isotonic saline solution for several days and simultaneous systemic administration of antibiotics can heal the abscess without having to open the abscess widely. This method has proven itself particularly in the case of postoperative fluid accumulations in the abdominal cavity , as it often saves the patient a repeat operation.
