The exchange variant of the Queen's Gambit is an opening of the chess game . This exchange variant is one of the closed games . It is classified as D35 and D36 in the ECO codes .

Each of the main variants begins with the following moves:

1. d2 – d4 d7 – d5
2. c2 – c4 e7 – e6
3. Nb1 – c3 Ng8 – f6
4. c4xd5 e6xd5

The main variants of the exchange variant include:

  • 5. Lc1-f4
  • 5. Bc1 – g5 c7 – c6 6. e2 – e3 Bf8 – e7 (Bc8 – f5 7. Qd1 – f3 leads to Bf5 – g6 8. Bg5xf6 to a double pawn on f6) 7. Qd1 – c2 0–0 (Nf6 -E4? 8. Bg5xe7 Qd8xe7 9. Nc3xd5 c6xd5 10. Qc2xc8 +) 8. Bf1-d3 Nb8-d7

Further 9. Ng1 – f3 Rf8 – e8 10. 0–0 Nd7 – f8 is an important regrouping and has reached a well-known position in the exchange variant of the Queen's Gambit, in which Black has prepared Nf6 – e4 with an exchange that relieves him. This occurs after 11. Ta1 – b1, which signals the minority attack b2 – b4. 11. Bg5xf6 Be7xf6 results in 12. b2-b4.

The flexible 9. Ng1 – e2 keeps White offensives open in the center or on the kingside.

  • 5. Lc1-g5 c7-c6 6. Dd1-c2
  • The Rubinstein trap that occurred in the Orthodox Defense was a position reached late in the exchange variant of the Queen's Gambit.

Carlsbad peasant structure

Opening idea

The asymmetrical pawn chains are characteristic of this variant. This peasant list is also called the Karlsbad peasant structure . As a rule, White tries to become active by means of a minority attack on the queenside. This is done using moves b2 – b4, a2 – a4 and b4 – b5 and the half-open c-line .

Black, on the other hand, usually prepares an attack for the king (with later f7 – f5 and the use of the diagonals c8 – h3).

Alternatively, after the generally accepted Bf1 – d3, there is the white setup with Ng1 – e2, f2 – f3 in preparation for e3 – e4, as used by Michail Botwinnik and Garri Kasparow .

The exchange variant is a very solid opening where the fight is strategic . It is used by players such as ex-world champion Anatoli Karpow and Alexei Schirow .
