Güigüe Abbey
The Abbey of San José del Avila in Güigüe is a Benedictine monastery in Güigüe , a small town south of Lake Valencia , in the Carlos Arvelo district , in Carabobo , Venezuela . It is a tourist attraction in the region.
history
On April 2, 1923, the first four Benedictines of the Congregation of St. Ottilien arrived in Caracas , Venezuela to establish a Benedictine branch. They wanted to continue the work of the priest Santiago Machado for children. On June 16, 1947, the monks were granted the right to found a monastery. On December 7, 1964, the monastery was elevated to an abbey . The first abbot was Father Theobald Schmid OSB (until 1979), a monk of the Archabbey of St. Ottilien .
The abbey was moved to Güigüe on September 22, 1990. The building was designed by the Venezuelan architect Jesús Tenreiro Degwitz, who received Venezuela's national architecture award for it.
Dept
From 2003 to 2007 (+) Father Otto Lohner OSB, originally from the Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien, was Abbot of Güigüe.
Branches
The abbey has two dependent branches. One is in Camuri Chico on the Venezuelan coast near Caracas , the other in El Rosal near Bogotá in Colombia .
