The badge for observation officers from aircraft was donated on January 27, 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II .

Award criteria

The general inspection of the military traffic system was able to award the award to observation officers of the air force . The requirements were:

  • a covered aircraft distance of at least 1000 km as an observer
  • Successful examination for technical aircraft assistance or successful repeat examination of technical aircraft assistance
  • conducted reconnaissance flights
  • Certificate of competency as an observation officer

Appearance and wearing style

The badge with a height of 71 mm is oval , 45 mm wide and consists of silver or silver-plated non - ferrous metal . A red enameled square is emblazoned in the center on a radiant ground , in the middle of which there is a square with a black and white square pattern (symbol of the General Staff ). This symbolism is enclosed by a closed laurel (left) and oak leaf wreath (right), which are symbolically connected at the lower end by a loop and at the upper end are united in the imperial crown . The back of the badge also shows a radial base and a vertically attached needle with a lower counter hook as well as the stamped two-line hallmark of the manufacturer CE JUNKER / BERLIN in the middle .

The award was worn as a pin badge on the left chest of the borrower.
