Type Caldera

Acıgöl-Nevsehir is a caldera in central Turkey . A highway connecting the cities of Acıgöl and Nevşehir crosses the caldera. The elliptical, 7 × 8 km measuring caldera is part of a larger and older caldera, which is covered in areas, on the bottom of which a group of maars , ash cones , lava domes and basaltic lava flows formed.

Three groups of obsidian lava flows have been dated: the oldest lava flows were formed between 190,000 and 180,000 years ago, some lava domes date from around 75,000 years ago, and on the western caldera floor there are some 20,000 to 15,000 year old craters . The last inexactly datable eruption occurred around 2080 BC. BC (± 200 years). Ash deposits cover Roman-Cappadocian artifacts from around 2,300 to 1,850 BC. Christ. The highest elevation of the caldera rim, the Kocadağ Tepe lava dome, has a height of 1689 m.
