economy
In the municipality near the city of Bor there is one of the largest copper mines in Europe , the mining of which began in 1903. However, over the decades, evidence has emerged that the mine was used for copper extraction in ancient times . It was discovered by chance, because the Czech engineer Franjo Šistek was originally looking for gold for Belgrade millionaire Đorđe Vajfert and came across copper . From 1903 to 1940 the mining was financed by France .
Since 1990, and especially during the sanctions against what was then Yugoslavia , the mine’s turnover has fallen rapidly compared to the 1970s and 1980s. The lack of money for new equipment and machines is another reason for the current problems. Even so, the mine still has a strong impact on the city, as almost the entire region's economy depends on it.
The whole region suffers from the fumes from the incinerators of this copper mine. The European Commission is particularly critical of the dumping of harmful residues and has already warned of an ecological catastrophe.
The mines were put up for sale in 2007. The Austrian consortium A-TEC of the entrepreneur Mirko Kovats made an offer to buy the copper mining complex RTB (Rudarsko-topionicarski Kombat “Bor”) in February 2008. The bid for the RTB-Bor copper mining complex was $ 466 million, while another bidder, SMR owned by Russian entrepreneur Oleg Deripaska , offered $ 370 million.
