AcFun ( Chinese  彈 幕 視頻 網 , Pinyin dàn mù shì pín wǎng ), or AC for short, is a Chinese video portal . AcFun is a portmanteau word from A nime , C omic and Fun (fun). The website is initially designed as an ACGN community (animation, comic, game and novel, German: cartoons , comics, computer games and light novels ).

The website can be used to comment on, view and share videos. According to Alexa.com, acfun.cn is number 171 in China and number 1,284 worldwide of the most visited websites.

properties

Users can comment on videos while they are playing. The comments are displayed as "danmu" (literally "bullets") in the video frames during video playback. Every viewer can create a "blacklist" with which they can block unwanted words or comments. However, these words or phrases will only be hidden in the videos from that viewer's screen. The other viewers can still see these words and comments in the videos. The website divides videos into different types:

  • Cartoons (MAD)
  • Music (Asian, Vocaloid themes and animation songs)
  • Video games (there are lots of Asian themes, but mostly MUGEN)
  • Entertainment (TV shows, movies)
  • Articles (politics, military articles with some otaku )
  • Dramas

history

In June 2007, AcFun was founded as an ACG website (animation, comics, games; cartoons, comics and computer games) on the subject of video sharing based on Sina Video. In 2008 the website was launched with a Niconico- style player . In 2009 the website added Dramas and Movies as new categories. Users can create an account and upload videos. On February 13, 2010, she held her first Spring Festival gala. On May 9, 2010, the number of articles and videos uploaded reached 100,000. In 2011, AcFun had over 200,000 articles and videos uploaded. The website changed its domain from acfun.cn to acfun.tv. acfun.tv was named "Specialty Website 2010" by New Weekly Magazine from Guangzhou . In 2014, the number of articles and videos uploaded reached one million. On December 31, 2014, AcFun broadcast a live broadcast from Kōhaku Uta Gassen . In March 2015 the company moved its headquarters to Beijing. On June 6, 2015, AcFun broadcast the show AKB48 for the anniversary year. On August 6, 2015, AcFun received $ 50 million Series A funding from Youku Tudou Inc. valued at $ 200 million. On August 7, 2015, AcFun organized an offline event in a cinema where people would watch the movie Mr. Black: Green Star (黑猫 警长 之 翡翠 之 星, Pinyin: Hēi māo jǐng zhǎng zhī fěicuì zhī xīng) and could comment. The comments immediately appeared on the walls of the cinema.

On October 10th, AcFun registered a second-level domain "acfun.tudou.com".

On January 14, 2016, AcFun closed a $ 60 million financing round led by Softbank China Venture Capital. On July 1, 2016, Liu Yanyan ( 刘 炎 焱 ) became CEO of AcFun. On February 2, 2018, the website as well as Android and iOS apps were offline because the server of Alibaba Cloud, a domain registrar, was shut down because the domain name was not renewed. There could be a connection with possible financial problems of AcFun. AcFun's official Weibo account implicitly confirmed the shutdown, but no official statement was made. Access to the website and apps was restored from February 12, ten days after the shutdown. In June 2018, AcFun was bought by Tencent subsidiary Kuaishou.

criticism

AcFun was criticized for its server instability problems and the change in the official stance and political stance of its user group, while the focus on ACGN (animation, comic, game and novel; German: animation, comic, computer games and light novels ) was lost.
