Acanthomeridion serratum is an extinct species with an uncertain position within the arthropods (Arthropoda).
features
Acanthomeridion serratum is parallel- sided and becomes up to 35 mm long. The head shield has a round front edge and has free cheeks, which are separated from the rest of the head by a fine seam, similar to most trilobites . The trunk consists of 11 smooth tergites that expand laterally into rearward-facing thorns that become longer in the rear tergites. The last tergite has a distinct groove from which a long dorsal spine emerges.
Limbs and soft tissues have not been preserved.
Way of life
Little can be said about the way of life because of the missing limbs, but because of the shape of the body it is assumed that Acanthomeridion serratum possibly lived on the sea floor.
Location
A total of 8 specimens of this species were found in the Chengjiang Fauna Community , People's Republic of China . This species is not known in other Cambrian fossil sites .
Systematics
The systematic classification within the arthropods has not yet been clarified. Due to the lack of information about the limbs and the morphological differences to other arthropods, Acanthomeridion serratum is the only representative in the genus Acanthomeridion and was classified in the monogeneric family Acanthomeridiidae in 1997 .
