Achanarra's Quarry

The inconspicuous quarry Achanarras Quarry south of the Scottish town of Halkirk is one of the most important sites for fossil fish from the Devonian Mountains in the world. Originally, flagstones , i.e. natural stone slabs made of sandstone, were quarried here, which, in addition to being used locally in fences, for roof coverings and as paving slabs, were also exported. The quarrying of the easily split stones began in the county of Caithness in Scotland at the beginning of the 19th century. In the heyday around 1900, around 1000 workers were employed in the quarries and factories. However, as transport costs rose, the industry experienced its decline.
