Achatinella abbreviata is a species of snail in the genus Achatinella , a group of nocturnal, viviparous tree snails thatare endemic to the Hawaiian island of Oahu .

description

Achatinella abbreviata has a case length of 1.9 centimeters and a case diameter of 1.0 centimeters. The mouth is 9.5 mm long and 4.5 mm wide. The case is egg-shaped, slightly bulbous and twisted to the right. The turns are curved. The black tip is quite short and blunt. The spindle (Columella) is coated with calloused edges and wound. The surface of the case is colored shiny olive yellow with a black-brown line at the seams. The underside of the last turn is dark green.

distribution

The occurrence of Achatinella abbreviata formerly extended along the crater rim at the Ka'au volcano, across the Palolo-Wailae ridge, the northwestern gorge next to the Palolo-Manoa ridge, over the Konahuanui ridge, the eastern Nuuana ridge, the Niu comb and over the Kailua comb. Currently there is only evidence from the Koolau Mountains.

status

The IUCN took Achatinella abbreviata 1996 in the category "extinct" ( extinct on). After a final proof in 1963, a malacologist succeeded in rediscovery in 2008. Probable causes for the supposed disappearance of the species were the excessive foraging by snail collectors, the stalking by pigs and rats, the clearing of the forests and invasive plant species such as Clidemia hirta and Dicranopteris linearis , which displaced the food trees on which the snails were dependent. The introduced ant species Pheidole megacephala , the garlic gloss snail ( Oxychilus alliarius ) and the rosy wolf snail ( Euglandina rosea ) also hunt Achatinella snails.
