Achmad Sjaichu

Achmad Sjaichu (* 1921 in Surabaya , Jawa Timur , Dutch East Indies ) is a former Indonesian politician of the Muslim legal scholars' organization Nahdlatul Ulama , the largest Islamic non-governmental organization in the world.

Life

Sjaichu began his political career when he was elected to the Surabaya City Council in 1950 . In 1955 he was elected member of the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat) , in which he represented the Muslim legal scholar organization Nahdlatul Ulama . At the same time he was a member of the board of the Nahdlatul Ulama between 1957 and 1979. Between 1958 and 1960 he was a member of the executive committee of the NU parliamentary group and, as the successor to Arudji Kartawinata , was for the first time deputy speaker of the House of Representatives from November 13, 1963 to November 15, 1965. On March 31, 1966 he became General Secretary of the National Front (Front Nasional) and also acted again as Deputy Speaker of the House between February 24 and May 17, 1966. In addition, he was second vice president of the NU.

As the successor to Mursalin Daeng Mamangung , he became speaker of the House of Representatives on May 17, 1966 and remained in this position until he was replaced by Idham Chalid on October 28, 1971. In 1978 he became chairman of the newly founded organization Ittihadul Muballighin .
