The Achsiedlung is a satellite town along the Bregenzer Ach on the outskirts of Bregenz in Vorarlberg . The residential complex is still one of the largest settlement projects in the state of Vorarlberg. At the time of construction it had around 839 apartments.

Location description

The settlement consists of around 50 buildings and is bordered in the southwest by the Bregenzer Ach. The Achsiedlungsstraße forms the border in the northeast.

history

Construction site of the Achsiedlung in 1975

The construction project is based on a two-stage urban development competition. This project from 1971 and 1972 was developed based on a design by Jakob Albrecht , Gunter Wratzfeld and Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz . The building project was implemented by Vogewosi , together with BUWOG and the ÖBB housing company , and started in 1974.

During the first construction phase, 13 structures with 242 residential units were realized, as well as an underground car park with 130 parking spaces. These first apartments were given to tenants in the summer of 1976.

In mid-1977 the second construction phase was ready for occupancy and the third construction phase was completed in the shell. A supermarket and a kindergarten were also built.

In February 1977 the “Action Group Achsiedlung” was founded for leisure activities in the Achsiedlung.

The fourth section was ready for occupancy in September 1980. With the fifth construction phase, Vorarlberg's largest settlement project to date was completed in autumn 1982.

In November 1995, a settlement office was opened to help solve problems in the settlement.

architecture

The settlement consists of multi-family houses staggered like a checkerboard with interconnected inner courtyards. The loggias are deep and glazed. The staircases are generously designed. The aluminum sculpture “Kanon” by Emil Gehrer from 1977 is remarkable .
