VOGEWOSI headquarters in Dornbirn

The Vorarlberger non-profit housing and settlement company mbH (VOGEWOSI) is the largest non-profit developer of public housing in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . The main owner of VOGEWOSI is the state of Vorarlberg with a share of 70.95%. Other owners are numerous communities in Vorarlberg, including the 5 municipalities and all market communities except for Bezau and Egg.

Tasks and conception

The tasks and goals of VOGEWOSI include the construction of new rental properties as well as their management and maintenance. Furthermore, profits are only generated within the legally prescribed framework and, according to the company's own statement, are immediately invested in new projects. The VOGEWOSI apartments can therefore be assigned to Vorarlberg municipal housing. In 2014, over 16,000 apartments were managed throughout Vorarlberg.

history

The foundation stone for today's company was laid back in 1939. The “Vorarlberger non-profit housing and settlement company” was founded this year with the aim of initiating a self-help home ownership program at the state level. Shortly after its foundation, this began with the construction of so-called South Tyrolean settlements under pressure from the National Socialist regime, to which Austria was already a member . In these settlement buildings, which were built in almost all of the larger communities in Vorarlberg, the South Tyrolean optants who had decided to relocate to the German Empire were accommodated . In 1943 these settlements were integrated into the " Neue Heimat Tirol".

After the end of the Second World War and the regaining of Austrian sovereignty, the Vorarlberg state parliament decided on December 5, 1947 to re-establish the VOGEWOSI. From a legal point of view, however, this new society had no common identity with the VOGEWOSI of the Nazi era. On March 25, 1948, the decision of the state government due to the acute shortage of living space was implemented by the state and the Vorarlberg cities. Initially, the company's field of activity was limited to the construction and maintenance of small apartments. It was not until 1950 that VOGEWOSI's tasks expanded to include the construction and management of multi-party residential buildings. In 1957, the state finally bought back the building material that had passed into the possession of the “Neue Heimat Tirol” in 1943. This inventory was finally returned to the administration of VOGEWOSI by the state of Vorarlberg in 1969.
