background

Acid attacks on women and men are relatively common in Bangladesh. Three quarters of the attack victims are women, their average age is 21 years. The first case of an acid attack became known in Bangladesh in 1967. The motive is revenge, for example in family disputes, after a rejected marriage proposal or after rejection of sexual advances.

The victims of such an attack are not only physically disfigured, but also suffer to a great extent from the psychological and social consequences (social exclusion), while the perpetrators often go unpunished.
