Agricultural School Hohenheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Agricultural School Hohenheim was founded in 1818 at the same time as the Hohenheim Academy by Queen Katharina as an orphanage. Since 1973 no more students have been admitted and the institution closed in the presence of the long-time directors Gottlieb Stengel and Theo Bischoff .

history

From the beginning, the farm and the affiliated schools were subordinate to the director of the academy, including the orphanage and later agricultural school. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that a separate directorate was set up, but the top management remained with the rector of the university. There was talk of a charity that was supposed to raise agricultural assistants at the same time, in response to the famine years of 1816 and 1817.

From 1840 onwards, the agriculture school increasingly recruited young farmers' sons from the region. The training in plant cultivation, plant nutrition, animal husbandry as well as agricultural management and market studies lasted two years. The technical lessons were mainly given by the university's specialist staff, boarding and lodging were free. In return, the students had to complete the practical part of their training on the Hohenheimer Gut. The periodical school magazine Der Landbaumann reported on the school operations and contained specialist articles by the teaching staff, which were very much appreciated by the alumni .

The agricultural school, which was initially an integrated elementary school, also developed into a primary school and a Real Latin school in the course of the 19th century. The primary school was attached to the Plieningen elementary school at the beginning of the 20th century , while the Real Latin school developed into a full grammar school in the middle of the 20th century, which has been called the Paracelsus grammar school since 1966 . The purely professional branch of the Agricultural School Hohenheim was closed in 1973. The association of former agricultural students founded in 1910 continues to exist.
