Adabas D (formerly Entire SQL DB-Server ) is a relational database management system from the Darmstadt-based company Software AG . It is based on the DDB4 program acquired by Software AG from Nixdorf . This in turn goes back to a research project of the TU Berlin from 1977.

In 1997, the software company SAP also acquired rights to this technology and subsequently developed it separately under the name SAP DB , then MaxDB and finally SAP MaxDB .

Software AG has been selling the Adabas database system since 1971 , which also offers an SQL interface, but has nothing in common with Adabas D except for its name.

Adabas D can be used on various computer platforms or processor types (x86, Alpha, Z-Series , Sparc ) as well as under various operating systems (Windows, Solaris, AIX , HP-UX, SUSE-Linux, Red Hat Linux). Different SQL versions (ANSI, Oracle and Native) are supported. There are interfaces to C, C ++ and Cobol.

From version 14 of ADABAS D, Unicode support is offered for the first time within this DBMS system .

Various companies have licensed Adabas D and deliver or partially deliver it as part of their software products, such as StarOffice .
