SAP MaxDB is a relational database management system (RDBMS) from SAP . The software emerged from the Adabas D database and was called SAP DB until 2004 . The manufacturer classifies the product as a database for enterprise applications within large networks with high loads and large data volumes.

history

The development of the database originally began in 1977 at the TU Berlin as a research project with its partner Nixdorf Computer AG under the direction of Rudolf Munz. The product was initially named VDN ("Distributed Database Systems Nixdorf") and later RDS ("Relational Database System"). 1981 to 1989 Nixdorf Computer took over the system under the names REFLEX and DDB / 4 . In 1989 it was sold under the name Entire SQL-DB Server and spun off into its own company, SQL Database Systems GmbH .

In 1992, the rights were awarded to the Software AG through which the database system under the name Adabas D sales. It has been certified for data management in SAP ERP software since 1994 . In 1997, development and marketing were split up: SAP now offered its own development line under the name SAP DB , Adabas D continued to be offered under this name.

In 2003/2004, MySQL AB received distribution rights to SAP DB as part of a cooperation agreement with SAP AG. The product itself remained the property of SAP. From version 7.5 the name changed first to MaxDB , then to MaxDB by MySQL . Further development and support within SAP applications continued to be provided by SAP. The cooperation ended in October 2007. From version 7.7 the name changed to SAP MaxDB.

Development and maintenance tasks for the versions offered by SAP have been carried out exclusively by SAP since 1997. Commercial sales for use with SAP applications are carried out exclusively by SAP and SAP partners.

License

For the operation of non-SAP applications, MaxDB was available to users up to version 7.6.00 either under a commercial or free community license (open source). There was no technical difference between the two variants. The difference was in the support agreements and warranty obligations, which went beyond the community license for the commercial version. SAP MaxDB versions greater than 7.6.00 are no longer released by SAP under an open source license, but can also be operated under a community license in the context of non-SAP applications. The license and contract regulations of SAP SE apply to the operation of SAP applications with SAP MaxDB.

For projects with non-GPL-licensed source texts, the SAP DB versions 7.2 up to and including 7.4 can be used. This is under the GPL / LGPL license.

Surroundings

The database server can be used under Windows from Windows 2000 and various Unix systems ( Linux , AIX , HP-UX , Solaris, etc.). The community version is currently available for Linux, Windows, AIX, and Solaris platforms.

With Database Studio is an administration tool with a graphical user interface. It offers DB administration, loading / unloading options and SQL query functionality under one roof and is currently provided for Windows and Linux systems. The software is Java- based and an integrated solution based on the Eclipse platform. This means that SAP MaxDB versions 7.6 and higher and version 7.5 can be operated with minor restrictions.

Further database administration tools , especially for the older MaxDB versions, are the Database Manager Gui (administration of DB instances), SQL Studio ( SQL access to the database), the command line tools dbmcliand sqlcli. DBMGui and SQL Studio are only available for Windows platforms.

These tools are also released for download under a community license.
