Adam Mickiewicz Monument in Weimar

The Adam Mickiewicz Monument is a bronze bust in Weimar .

In 1956, 101 years after his death in 1855, the Polish national poet Adam Mickiewicz was donated a bronze bust roughly twice life size. It is located in Weimarer Park on the Ilm near the cone bridge on the northwest corner of the Weimar City Palace . The name, the year of birth 1798 and the year of death 1855 are written on the pebbly sandstone plinth . The sculptor Gerhard Thieme was the founder and creator .

Mickiewicz not only studied Goethe's works, but also felt a kindred spirit with Schiller's thoughts on freedom. In 1829, on Goethe's 80th birthday, he had met him in Weimar on the recommendation of the piano virtuoso Maria Szymanowska , his mother-in-law. Mickiewicz arrived in Weimar on August 19, 1829 and stayed daily with Goethe from August 24 to 31 , together with Antoni Edward Odyniec who was accompanying him . This visit is very well handed down by letters from the writer, the aforementioned Odyniec, to Julian Korsak .

There are also monuments by Alexander Pushkin and Sandor Petöfi in the park on the Ilm. However, these poets were never personally in Weimar, but they were great admirers of Goethe. Louis Fürnberg wrote his meeting in Weimar about Mickiewicz . The Louis-Fürnberg monument is also in Ilmpark not far from the city palace, but on Burgplatz, so that a visual relationship between the two monuments is not possible.
