As adaxial from latin ad "to" and axis "axis," a location close to is generally referred to in the body or the body axis. In botany it is the name given to the side of a leaf facing the stem axis ( stem axis ) . This side is morphologically the top, but does not always have to face up. For flower organs , adaxial means the inwardly directed side.

The side facing away from the body axis or stem axis is called abaxial .
