Addenbrooke's Hospital is a large teaching hospital in Cambridge , England, with close ties to Cambridge University . It was founded in 1766 on the will of John Addenbrooke (1680-1719) and his £ 4,500 inheritance . Addenbrooke was a doctor and is a fellow of St Catharine's College , which is part of Cambridge University. In 1976 the hospital moved from Trumpington Street to the southern edge of town. For a long time the hospital was also known under the name "New Addenbrooke's".

The hospital has an annual budget of £ 300 million. The over 6,500 employees take care of patients in around 1,100 beds (as of 2005). The area around Addenbroke's is like a small town. There is a shopping center, sports halls, and overnight accommodation. More and more biomedical research institutes are also settling there. This is to be supported by the construction of research facilities. A cancer research center has been built since 2003 and a heart-breast center is under construction. The site is to be expanded to double its size by 2020.
