Adhemarius is a genus within the butterfly family of swarmers (Sphingidae).

features

The moths are relatively large with very long and slender bodies. The sickle-shaped front wings have a clearly inwardly curved wing tip . The outer edge of both pairs of wings is more or less fluted. The wing colors include various shades of green, light brown and red. Basally, there is a large dark point on the fore wing, in some species there are several. The antennae of the males are combed, those of the females are thread-like.

The pre-imaginal stages are poorly known. Only the caterpillars of Adhemarius gannascus and Adhemarius ypsilon are known from breeding so far. Both have long, slender bodies that taper towards the front to form a pointed head. There are a number of oblique stripes on the sides of the body. The anal horn is very long and heavily granulated. Since these characteristics are typical of the subfamily Smerinthinae , it can be assumed that the other caterpillars of the genus have similar characteristics.

Occurrence

The genus is mainly neotropical .
