Adicta ( Spanish for dependent ) was an Argentinian band from La Plata , whose musical style ranged between synthpop , rock and electronic dance music . They themselves compared their style to Britpop .

Career

The band was founded in 1999 by Rudie Martinez and Adrián Nievas, called Toto , both former musicians from other formations. In 2000 they recorded their debut album Shh , which became a commercial and artistic success - this is how the music journalist Pablo Schteingart called it the best album of the year in the Argentine edition of Rolling Stone magazine . The single Poco a poco , released in 2001, also received good reviews.

In 2003 the follow-up album Miedo was released , which included the biggest hit to date, Tu Mal . This song was published in an alternative version on an EP of the same name in the same year. In the same year the line-up changed, the new members were Julián Fraus (guitar), Mario López (bass) and Sergio Sotomayor (drums).

In 2005 the band brought out the album Día de la Fiebre with more emphasis on rock elements, the couplings of which Soy Animal and El Peor Dragón could also develop into club hits. In 2008 the double album Cátedras followed , in which the band moved further away from the pure synthpop sound and integrated acoustic instruments.

In 2012, the singer Adrián Nievas fell out with Martínez. After leaving, there were a few concerts without Nievas, after which the band split.

Nievas had already released a solo album under the name Ciudadano Toto in 2003 and resumed work on this project in 2012. Shortly after the release of his second album in May 2015, Nievas died under unexplained circumstances. After his departure, Rudie Martínez founded the Maldonado project and also took part in the reunion of his former band Los Brujos .

style

In their music, Adicta combined melancholy vocal lines with guitars, synthesizer riffs and an almost exclusively minor harmony. The beats are combinations of traditional drumming and electronic samples from techno and drum and bass . From the album Día de la Fiebre (2005), elements of rock were integrated more strongly into the music, which dominate the double album Cátedras .

At live concerts, the band usually appeared in outfits that contained elements of kitsch , but also of the homoerotic scene. This is one of the reasons why it was very popular, especially among homosexuals.
