The Adolf-Bender-Zentrum eV , founded in 1985 in St. Wendel ( Saarland ), is an independent provider of child and youth welfare services that is also active beyond state borders.

founding

The center was founded in 1985 on the initiative of Armin Lang, member of the Saarland state parliament . Founding members were u. a. Hans Bender (son of the namesake), the historian Dr. Michael Mallmann, Helmar Schulz and Elmar Peiffer. It was named after the St. Wendel painter Adolf Bender (1903–1997). Bender was a democrat , anti-fascist and pacifist , which brought him persecution and temporary internment in the concentration camps Börgermoor and Esterwegen during the Nazi era . After the war he told school classes and youth groups about his experiences for a long time as a contemporary witness. In his picture series "Moorsoldatenzyklus", which can be seen as a permanent exhibition in the house, he processed his experiences.

The center is located in the former forester's house in the town of St. Wendel, the premises of which have been converted in accordance with the educational-pedagogical mandate. The center is managed by the full-time managing director, Jörn Didas (since 2017).
