history

Portuguese sphere of influence on the Lesser Sunda Islands in the 16th and 17th centuries

In the 16th century, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to reach the region and, among other things, claimed Adonara as their territory. At the time, the island was sparsely populated, with only seven or eight villages. In 1599 two churches were built on Adonara. In the 16th century, all but a Christian village were inhabited by animists. The Christian village, however, switched to Islam in the 17th century. A local kingdom had existed on the island since 1650. In 1851, the Portuguese governor of the Lesser Sunda Islands, José Joaquim Lopes de Lima, sold the island along with other areas to the Netherlands . This was officially confirmed in the Treaty of Lisbon in 1859 .
