Adrian Ioana

Adrian Ioana (born January 18, 1981 in Târgu Jiu , Romania ) is a Romanian mathematician who deals with Von Neumann algebras , ergodic theory of orbits of groups and representation theory of groups.

Ioana received a first prize in the Romanian national mathematics competition in 1997 and a silver medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1999. He studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest with a degree in 2003 and at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received his doctorate under Sorin Popa in 2007 ( Some rigidity results in the orbit equivalence theory of non-amenable groups ). As a post-doctoral student he was an Olga Taussky Todd Instructor at Caltech and a Clay Research Fellow from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego . Since 2006 he has been a member of the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

He proved that countable discrete groups that contain a copy of the free group allow uncountably many non-orbit-equivalent effects.

In 2012 he received the EMS Prize for his impressive and deep-seated work in the field of operator algebras and their connection to ergodic and group theory and for the solution of some important open problems in the deformation and rigidity theory of operator algebras, including a conjecture by Alain Connes about von Neumann algebras without external automorphisms (laudation). He is a lecturer at the ICM 2018 (Rigidity for von Neumann algebras).
