Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

The Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) is an organization based in Alexandria, Virginia , which is a leader in the standardization of e-learning technologies. The ADL publishes the collection of standards SCORM , which together with the competing AICC standard represents one of the two most important reference points of the numerous standardization efforts. The ADL was founded in 1997 by the US Department of Defense and is under the aegis of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness .

It works closely with standards makers for e-learning technologies, including IEEE , the IMS Global Learning Consortium and the Ariadne Foundation .
