Advanced Squad Leader ( ASL ) is a conflict simulation game for two players by Don Greenwood junior . It was published by Avalon Hill in 1985 and was a further development of the game Squad Leader by John Hill . Battles from the Second World War are re-enacted in various scenarios.

The game consists of a rulebook and various modules. To play you need the rulebook and module 1: “Beyond Valor”. For an easier entry into the game there are now the "ASL Starter Packs" 1 to 3, which offer (simplified) rules and material for an easier entry into the system.

In 1998, Monarch Avalon Printing sold the rights to the entire game program of its subsidiary Avalon Hill to Hasbro . In 1999 Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) began an exclusive partnership with Hasbro with the aim of getting ASL and other Avalon Hill games. In addition to new and revised editions of the original rules and modules, a number of completely new modules have been released, including the above-mentioned 'ASL Starter Kits'.

Computer games

Close Combat was developed in 1996 as a computer game version of Advanced Squad Leader (ASL). The developer studio Atomic Games had previously developed several games for Avalon Hill, such as Operation Crusader and Stalingrad. After Avalon Hill got into financial difficulties, however, the development was finally completed for Microsoft.

World War II Tactics (WW2T) is another standalone computer game based on the ASL ruleset, which is currently released in an alpha version. The game can be played against another human opponent in the hot seat, LAN or online. The rule set currently only includes pure infantry scenarios, but is constantly being expanded. In addition, you can create your own maps and scenarios using an editor. The rules of the game are 100% validated, so even inexperienced players can find access to the ASL world.
