The Aeltere Casseler Turngemeinde von 1848 eV is a German gymnastics and sports club in Kassel . The club now offers a wide range of sports, including badminton, basketball, fistball, fencing, canoeing, athletics, bounce ball, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball and hiking.

history

The club was founded on March 22nd, 1848 as the "Casseler Turngemeinde". As early as autumn 1849 there was a split due to political differences among leading members, which culminated in May 1850 in the establishment of a second club, the “Cassel Men's Gymnastics Club”. While in the "Cassel gymnastics community" the democratic orientation prevailed, the "Cassel men's gymnastics club" wanted to be politically neutral. The political repression in Kurhessen under the reactionary Prime Minister Hassenpflug included a. the suppression of gymnastics activities, but it was not until the end of 1853 that people surrendered to the inevitable: after that, no more secret meetings and gymnastic evenings are known. Only after the end of the Hassenpflug era could the Kassel gymnasts become active again. In August 1862, the now called "Aeltere Casseler Turngemeinde" was revived, with all the inventory, cash and debts of the 48er Turngemeinde that had been saved over the years.

The club's own gym was inaugurated on Schützenstrasse in September 1885. In 1898, on the 50th anniversary of the original founding of the club, the club changed its name to "Aeltere Casseler Turngemeinde von 1848". A new gymnasium on Wimmelstrasse, built between 1909 and 1911, was inaugurated in 1911, and this made it possible to introduce women's gymnastics in the club in autumn 1911.

In the post-war year 1919, the “Aeltere Casseler Turngemeinde” merged with the “Association for Lawn Games 03”, which had also suffered severe membership losses during the war years. The new club name was now "Casseler Turn- und Sportverein von 1848". The VfR 03 brought a beautiful sports field on Leipziger Strasse to the club's assets. The footballers of the merged club won the championship in the football district Hessen-Hanover in 1921/22 , but were then only sixth and last in the final round of the West German football championship 1921/22 .

In 1921 the range of sports practiced was expanded by leasing a swimming area on the Fulda. A singing department was also added during this time. In autumn 1924 the sports department that had emerged from the former VfR 03 left the club again and formed the “Casseler Sportclub 03” . The gymnastics community took its old name "Aeltere Casseler Turngemeinde" again.
