San Domenico Monastery (Sora)
The convent of San Domenico (Sora) (lat. Prioratus simplex BMV et S. Dominici Abbatis ) since 1011 an abbey of Benedictine , since 1222 a priory of Cistercian in Sora , Region Lazio , Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo in Italy.
history
The holy Benedictine Dominic of Sora founded a Benedictine abbey consecrated to Our Lady in 1011 with reform intentions at the place of birth of Cicero in today's Sora , which in turn settled the Casamari monastery ten kilometers away in 1036 . From 1104 the abbey in Sora bore the name of its founder. In 1222 the monastery was attached to Casamari, which had become Cistercian and dominated the region, as a priory. Monastic life came to a standstill in 1653 (after it had already been converted into a commander in 1472 ), but the monastery was repopulated by Casamari in 1833 and still exists today (with currently 5 monks). The monastery church has been a parish church since 1935 and has been named Basilica minor since the millennium in 2011 . The Cistercian character of the church has been preserved despite the earthquake damage.
