The AeroVelo Atlas in flight

The Canadian engineers Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson designed together with the students and graduates of the University of Toronto in early 2012, the project Aerovolo the interpretation of a muscle force helicopter, with the 250,000 USD doped AHS Sikorsky Prize to be won. The design of the rotors, which is essential for success, was completed at the end of April 2012 and the first flight took place on August 28, 2012.

Todd Reichert made the crucial flight on June 13, 2013 at an altitude of up to 3.3 meters and 64 seconds.

construction

The four rotors are arranged on the arms of an X-shaped tubular space frame made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (KFK). A converted racing bike hangs below the frame cross for the drive and control. The rotors consist of wing spars made of KFK, ribs made of balsa wood and a covering with biaxially oriented polyester film ("Mylar").

Because of their size, the rotors are still in the area of the ground effect at the height required in the price terms . This effect increases the lift compared to operation in open air. He thus contributes to the fact that the flight is possible despite the performance limited by the human physique.
