Aerobiont I

Aerobiont I is a sculpture designed as a mobile in Magdeburg's old town .

Location and history

The mobile is located on the east side of Hasselbachplatz at the confluence of Liebigstrasse, which is designed as a pedestrian area here.

Aerobiont I was designed in 1992/1993 by Jörg-Tilmann Hinz , who won a competition for a work of art for installation on Hasselbachplatz, which is important in terms of urban development and marks the southern access to Magdeburg's inner city. The competition originally envisaged setting up the property in the middle of Hasselbachplatz. The Hasselbach fountain had stood there for a long time from 1900 onwards , but was later relocated. However, due to the trams passing through the square in the middle , this was moved away and the current location was chosen.

execution

Aerobiont I is made of steel, stainless steel and aluminum and was built by welding and assembly. Parts are painted in green and red. The work has a height of 8 meters. It measures 4.5 meters in width and depth. Many of the individual parts are movably connected by ball bearings and are moved by the wind. The name aerobiont alludes to the need for a draft and is otherwise used for living beings that depend on the air.

The artist is said to have been interested in realizing the constantly changing activation of space and the various possibilities of interacting with one another. This in the field of tension between a technical / mechanical system, on the one hand, as represented by the sculpture, and on the other hand, organic structures, which should be associated with the sculpture through the complex movement, playfulness and gestures.
