The Hasselbachplatz is a place in Magdeburg , which lies south of the city center and is a central connection node in addition to the transport Damaschkeplatz. It is named after Carl Gustav Friedrich Hasselbach , mayor of Magdeburg for many years . In recent years, the area around the square has developed into the center of Magdeburg's nightlife.

Transport facility and hub

The square is the intersection of five streets: it forms the southern end of the Breite Weg and Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse, Hallische Strasse joins from the west, Sternstrasse from the south and Liebigstrasse from the east. Bicycles and motor vehicles run on the circular one-way traffic, while trams cross the square. There is also a DB stop of the same name about 200 meters west of Hasselbachplatz, which is on the Magdeburg – Leipzig railway line and is served by the Mittelelbe S-Bahn trains.

Architectural history

From the middle of the 19th century, the fortress city of Magdeburg was greatly expanded, the fortifications dismantled and the suburbs of Sudenburg (1867) and Buckau (1887) incorporated and connected to the southern old town in terms of transport. When the city was being expanded, Breite Weg was extended to the south and Hasselbachplatz was created during this time. Before 1890 the square was only called 'fork' and simply referred to the fact that the road forked from there to Buckau and Sudenburg.

Hasselbachplatz was laid out in a star shape and enclosed with buildings in the Wilhelminian style. Some of these buildings had baroque style elements in order to adapt the square to the architectural character of the Breite Weg.

From 1890 to April 7, 1927, the Hasselbach fountain , a 15 meter high monumental fountain with a relief from Hasselbach, adorned the square. For traffic-related reasons, however, the Hasselbachbrunnen was removed and space was made for automobile traffic and trams. A reconstruction of the monument can still be seen today on Haydnplatz. The fountain has a large water basin, in the middle of which sit 2 female and male figures representing the industry, science, agriculture and handicraft. A bronze relief is attached to the sandstone obelisk, which shows the mayor to be honored in profile.

On June 17, 1953 , Hasselbachplatz was the central starting point for the Magdeburg uprising .

The southern old town around the square was one of the few districts of Magdeburg whose building fabric survived, at least in part, the great bombardments of World War II . In the time of the GDR, however, many of the buildings fell into disrepair so that some of them had to be demolished after German reunification . The house on Karl-Marx-Straße or Breiter Weg 249 (following the corner house on Liebigstraße) is in a building that was adapted to the Wilhelminian style, but was modern in construction from the GDR era to one that still existed in the 1970s due to the Second World War cracked vacant lot has been inserted. Since the beginning of the 1990s, other buildings have been restored ( e.g. the flat bolt with an acute-angled floor plan between Breitem Weg and Otto-von-Guericke-Straße) or newly built ( e.g. the Sparkasse instead of the previous building demolished in the late 1980s). In 1992/93 the plastic Aerobiont I was created on the east side of the square . Today the square and its surroundings have been completely restored and built up except for one house.

The neighborhood

The region around Hasselbachplatz is the pub center in Magdeburg, which is why residents and visitors also speak of the Magdeburg Kiez . In 2012 there were around three dozen pubs, bars, restaurants and discos on and around Hasselbachplatz. In the recent past, however, some bar owners have closed their shops, including Café Liebig, Markant and the Urbar.

The square is classified as a crime hotspot and is monitored by video technology from the surrounding buildings.
