Design and history

The monumental fountain, erected as a memorial to the Mayor of Magdeburg, Gustav Hasselbach , is based on a design by the sculptor Karl Albert Bergmeier . Bergmeier had won the 1883 competition for the design of the fountain, which was endowed with 1,500 marks . The second prize of 1000 marks went to Adolf Hartung and the third prize of 500 marks went to the design by the Magdeburg-born architect Richard Saran in collaboration with Magdeburg's city architect Jähn. In addition, the jury recommended the purchase of three further models and drawings submitted due to their artistic quality.

The crossing Ulrichstraße / Kaiserstraße was originally planned as the location - roughly corresponding to today's crossing of Ernst-Reuter-Allee and Otto-von-Guericke-Straße. Because of the traffic load, which was already too high for that, it was installed on Hasselbachplatz in the south of Magdeburg's old town instead . The area represents the center of the city expansion to the south under Hasselbach. The inauguration took place on November 30, 1890. However, the traffic load on Hasselbachplatz, which was also considerable, led to the Hasselbach fountain being moved to its current location on Haydnplatz in 1927.

The magnificent design of the fountain is based on Roman fountains from the Baroque era . A stepped platform rises from a large, round fountain basin, in which halved fountain basins are arranged. The podium is flanked by four allegorical figures. A woman with a book stands for science, a man with a gear wheel for industry, a woman with a beehive for agriculture and a young man with a rod of Mercury for trade. The figures were originally created by the sculptor Emil Hundrieser , but have been considered lost since the 1950s. In the course of a restoration of the fountain in 1999/2000, the figures were recreated using historical photographs by the sculptors Peter Michael and Christoph Reichenbach from Halle (Saale) . On the pedestal rests a pedestal decorated in the neo-baroque style with an obelisk resting on it . The base is inscribed and richly decorated. There is a bronze portrait depicting Hasselbach, the coat of arms of the city of Magdeburg , the Prussian eagle and the actual dedication.

The dedication inscription reads:
