The comedy deals with the indulgence preacher Johann Tetzel . According to Wilhelm Scherer in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (1882), the comedy is “very effective, lively and well motivated” and overall “perhaps the best dramatic treatment of the Reformation”.
