On October 8, 1996, an aircraft accident occurred with an Antonov An-124-100 freighter on Aeroflot flight 9981 (flight number: SU9981 ) . The Aeroflot plane , which was on a charter cargo flight from the Chkalovsky airfield to Turin airport that day , crashed shortly after a missed approach at the destination airport, near San Francesco al Campo , killing two occupants of the plane and two people on the ground.
plane
The machine was a large Antonov An-124-100 transport aircraft, which was built in the post-Soviet era in 1993 by the now Ukrainian aviation company Antonov . The machine had the serial number 9773053359122 and the model serial number 07-02 . It was delivered to Aeroflot , which approved it with the aircraft registration RA-82069 . The machine was equipped with four Lotarjow D-18T engines. At the time of the accident, the Antonov was leased to the Ajax airline .
Occupants, route and purpose of the flight
The machine flew from the Chkalovsky military airfield in Russia at around 10:25 a.m. local time . An empty flight was to be made to Turin , Italy , where Ferrari- branded cars were to be charged. Then the machine should fly on to Abu Dhabi . The vehicles were intended for the Sultan of Brunei , who is known to be an eccentric collector of European sports and luxury cars, often made as one-offs for him. There was a four-person crew and 19 people on board for handling the vehicles to be transported. The captain had 431 hours of flight experience with the type of aircraft flown.
the accident
On the approach to Turin, the pilots received clearance to land on runway 36. After a missed approach was carried out on the first attempt at landing , the pilots flew over the runway at a height of only 15 meters. In the small town of San Francesco al Campo to the north behind the runway, the machine brushed against trees and houses at a height of 329 meters above sea level and finally fell into a house which was about 330 meters above sea level. The height of the Turin runway is 304 meters above sea level. Two inmates of the Antonov and two residents of the house were killed in the accident.
root cause
The investigation showed that the minimum distance from the runway surface that the 24 wheels of the main landing gear reached during the overflight was less than one meter. According to the investigators, poor coordination and training of the crew (the captain had only 431 hours of flight experience on the type of aircraft being flown), poor approach planning and a delayed decision to miss the approach at a time when the heavy machine had almost touched down had contributed to the crash.
At this point in time, runway 36 near the runway threshold was renewed. Of the instrument landing system , only the landing course transmitter was in operation because the glide path display was switched off during the work. The usable length of the runway has been reduced from 3300 to 2350 meters due to ongoing work. All this information was recorded in a regular NOTAM and the crew was informed accordingly when they first contacted air traffic control in Turin.
