On February 28, 1973 , a Yakovlev Yak-40 crashed on Aeroflot flight X-167 shortly after take-off.
course
Flight X-167 took off at 18:58 local time from Semei Airport in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic with destination Karagandy . The Jak-40 rose to a height of 100 meters and then lost altitude again. About 1.5 kilometers past the runway, it hit the ground flat, bounced back into the air, and fell back to the ground 50 meters further, exploding. All 32 inmates, including the Qaisar Qysylorda girls' basketball team , died.
Cause of accident
According to eyewitness testimony, they saw a jet of flame at a height of around 80 meters, which fell shortly afterwards. A hole was found in the cockpit window to the left of the captain's seat, which led to the theory that Flight X-167 was shot down. After examining the cockpit debris, however, no signs of a launch could be found. Most of the remaining aircraft debris also indicated no specific cause of the crash. However, the trim of the horizontal stabilizer was set to top-heavy (+ 1.2 °). It could not be clarified whether the horizontal stabilizer was on top-heavy position due to a malfunction or a pilot's error .
