Aesculap polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aesculap Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 130). The work was performed for the first time on January 25, 1853 in the Zum Sperl dance hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The polka was written for the medicine ball in Mardi Gras in 1853 and was premiered on this occasion. It was dedicated to medical students at the University of Vienna. In doing so, the composer continued a tradition of his father , who died in 1849 , and who had also enriched earlier medicine balls with his compositions. The name Aesculap comes from ancient Greek, where Asklepios was considered the god of healing. Hence the relation to the medical students.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 51 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
