Afala Island (English; Bulgarian остров Афала ostrow Afala ) is a west-southwest-east-northeast orientation 360 m long and 310 m wide rocky island off the north coast of Nelson Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is 0.74 km west of Baklan Point , 0.86 km northeast of Retamales Point and 1.05 km south-southeast of Withem Island .
British scientists mapped it in 1968. The Bulgarian Commission for Antarctic Geographical Names named it in 2018 after the trawler Afala , which operated for fishing between 1985 and 1986 under Captain Kosjo Kostow in the waters around South Georgia .
