Afferent loop syndrome

The afferent loop syndrome (syndrome of afferent loop) is a rare complication due to a partial removal of the stomach ( gastric resection ), which in particular after Billroth II-operation may occur. Obstruction of the drainage ( stasis ) of the afferent loop of the duodenum , or the penetration of gastric secretions, can cause the contents of the bile , pancreas or stomach to build up .

Clinically show u. a. Pain, nausea, and vomiting. Surgical therapy is currently the therapeutic gold standard . Alternatively, a stent can be used or the accumulated secretions can be drained away using a drainage system.
