Affinity Publisher is a page layout program from the British software manufacturer Serif . The aim is to create an alternative product to InDesign . The program is part of the Affinity suite together with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer .
history
In August 2018, the software company Serif made a free public beta version available for MacOS and Windows. The full version was presented in June 2019. The first version number (1.7) has been adapted to the other two apps. Parallel to the release version there is still a beta, which serves to present new features and to eliminate errors. On June 16, 2019, Serif announced that there are over two million Affinity users worldwide. At the end of 2019, Affinity Publisher was named "Mac App of the Year" by Apple.
Version 1.8.0 was released on February 26, 2020. The main innovations were the IDML import of InDesign documents, the XLSX import of Excel tables, the checking of record files via preflight (“checklist”) and the support of templates.

Affinity Publisher's main focus is on desktop publishing of print and online media. Publisher therefore masters the functions customary in the industry such as master pages, text frame links, OpenType functionality, and end-to-end support for the CMYK color model . The StudioLink technology developed by Serif allows the owners of Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer to perform all pixel and vector editing within Affinity Publisher - it is not necessary to start Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer.
Supported file formats
In addition to the Affinity suite's proprietary file formats, supported file formats include Adobe Photoshop PSD, Adobe Illustrator AI, Adobe Interchange IDML, Microsoft Word DOCX, Microsoft Excel XLSX, PDF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, EPS, and the PDF / X export standards for PDF / X-1a, PDF / X-3 and PDF / X-4.
