history

The excesses of some African leaders in the 1970s who tried to cling to power by violating human rights led the Organization for African Unity (OAU) to act. In July 1979 a resolution was passed which led to the drafting of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights . The Charter, also known as the “Banjul Charter”, was adopted in 1981 and came into force in 1986.

It then became apparent that explanations and training were necessary for the implementation of the charter. On the initiative of Hassan Bubacar Jallow , this marked the birth of the African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies. Raymond Sock became the first director .

In 1994 a new statute was passed that reorganized the status as a non-governmental organization (NGO). Zoe Tembo from Zambia became the new director and died in 2001.
