African Groundnut Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The African Groundnut Council (AGC) is an intergovernmental organization for the promotion of peanuts from Gambia , Mali , Niger , Senegal , Sudan and Nigeria .

history

The AGC was founded in June 1964 and was based in Lagos (Nigeria) from its inception until 2005 , and due to lobbying by the Groundnut Farmers Association of Nigeria, it moved to Kano in 2005 . The first managing director of the organization was Jacques Diouf.

The creation of the AGC was intended to promote economic cooperation and discuss common issues such as the pricing of goods among African manufacturers. It also acts as a joint marketing, research and advertising agency for its members. At the time of their independence, the governments of the producing countries received a substantial percentage of the national income and foreign exchange earnings from the export of peanuts. The AGC was set up to initiate a cooperative action to stabilize prices and promote producer interest in the international commodity markets.

The AGC had a representative office in Brussels in the 1970s.
